Almaas Elman the sister of the renowned human rights activist Ilwad Elman was Wednesday afternoon shot dead near Halane compound in Mogadishu.
The circumstances under which the Almaas was killed remained unclear but sources said a bullet ripped through a vehicle she was. Sources said she was heading to the airport from the airforce Hangar in Halane.
Almaas Elman attended a meeting on improving rural livelihoods before her killing. She returned from Canada along with her sister Ilwad Elman and Mother Fartuun to help Somalia. She is daughter of late peace activist Elman Ali Ahmed who was murdered in 1996, the man who coined “Drop the Gun, Pick up the Pen.
Almaas previously worked as first secretary at Somali embassy in Kenya. She had been actively involved in Elman Peace foundation founded by her father who was killed in 1996 in Mogadishu.
