The third Round of IGAD EU Consultation Commences in Brussels concluded on the margins of the AU– EU ministerial meeting on the 22nd of January 2019 in Brussels.
The meeting was chaired by State Minister Hirut Zemene representing the IGAD and on the EU side by High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Federica Mogherini.
The two sides held fruitful exchanges on how to strengthen the cooperation between EU and the IGAD in the areas of peace and security. In this regard, they discussed on concrete cooperation that could be advanced in light of positive developments in the region that ranges from Ethio– Eritrea rapprochement and its positive implications in strengthening cooperation in the Horn region, on strengthening gains made in 3Somalia and the peace processes in South Sudan.
They highlighted opportunities for strengthening the gains made in the region through advancing integration agenda while took stock of the importance to continue
cooperation in fighting terrorism and threats to peace and security.
The IGAD members expressed gratitude for the multi-faceted support extended to the region, while the EU reiterated its continued commitment to support the regional peace, security and integration agenda.
