The Somaliland national human rights commission, government ministers, opposition officials ,MPs and other high profile guests have attended the commemoration ceremony of International Human rights day.

Organizers stressed the importance of Human Rights, access to education and health, and protection of individual rights in the country.

The chairman of Somaliland national human rights commission has commented the conditions of suspects and inmates in all regions of Somaliland.

“The Somaliland national human rights commission continued to monitor the human rights situation in the various places of detention to assess the conditions of suspects and inmates. The Commission inspected prisons and police stations inthe all the regions of the country and noted a number of concerns. The prison population increased considerably in 2018.”Said Mr Barud

“The SLNHRC observed the following challenges;high prison population, inadequate accommodation facilities in the prisons,congestion in the prison and police cells, inadequate water supply,inaccessibility to information and feedback from the court leading to long and arbitrary detention.Said Mohamed Barud SLNHRC chairman
Citing this year’s theme (StandUp4HumanRights) The United Nations Assistance Mission inSomalia (UNSOM) senior human rights officer Simon Strachan acknowledged the tremendous progress the country has made in addressing human rights situation.

This year’s Human Rights Day (10 December) will launch a year-long campaign to mark the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR).
