Horndiplomat-Maine (NEWS CENTER) — Republican Presidential Candidate Donald Trump has a new target when it comes to immigrants…Somalis. Trump told an audience at Merrill Auditorium in Portland Thursday that Maine is a major destination for Somali refugees.
He said the nation’s acceptance of refugees is a problem that must stop.Trump’s words are upsetting a lot of people including members of the Somali community here in Maine.
Portland Mayor Ethan Strimling and members of the Somali community will take to the steps of City Hall this afternoon to condemn Trumps rhetoric about refugees.
The president of the Somali Community of MAine calls Trumps comments destructive and damaging.
Superintendent of Portland public schools spoke out Friday in a statement saying the school district is committed to inclusiveness.
“Our Somali students and their families are a shining example of this strength. As our largest and one of our oldest language communities, we have seen tremendous success stories in our classrooms, academic activities and athletic venues. We have outstanding staff of Somali origin and they are contributing every day to making the Portland Public Schools a wonderful place to learn and work. We are proud of all of their contributions to the Portland community.”
Friday’s news conference will be on the steps of City Hall at 2:30.
