HARGEISA — A Somaliland police officer who transported his brother’s body and the man accused of killing him in the same vehicle before handing the suspect over to authorities is to be honoured for his courage and dedication.
Ahmed Geeddi Mohamed Abdi, an officer serving in the Sanaag region, handed over the suspect following the killing near Erigavo, upholding the law despite his personal loss.
Thousands of Somalilanders have reacted to the story on social media, applauding his courage and restraint. The police statement announcing plans to honour him attracted thousands of reactions and hundreds of comments, with users praising his decision to entrust the case to the authorities.
“The Somaliland Police Command will reward and accord high honours to officer Ahmed Geeddi Mohamed Abdi, who demonstrated dedication and courage,” the force said in a statement on its official Facebook page.
Police Commissioner Brigadier General Abdirahman Abdillahi Hassan invited Ahmed to his office and instructed the Sanaag regional police commander to arrange his immediate journey to police headquarters.
The command said Ahmed would be honoured and presented with “the reward he has earned through his dedication”. It did not specify the reward.
Ahmed’s actions have also drawn praise from lawyer Guuleed Dafac, who described the officer’s conduct as an example of humanity and professional responsibility.
“Ahmed Geeddi Mohamed did what humanity and his duty as a police officer required,” Dafac wrote in a Facebook post. “He showed us that humanity, which is in short supply among us, is still alive and possible.”
For Dafac, the significance of Ahmed’s decision lay in his ability to exercise restraint while confronting the death of his own brother.
“This is courage. True courage is when you overcome yourself,” he wrote.
Dafac praised Ahmed for bringing his brother’s body and the suspect together and placing the matter before the law. He added that the officer’s conduct reminded him of Haji Abdi Waraabe.
The public response and the police command’s promised recognition have brought attention to an officer whose commitment to his duty endured a deeply personal test, leaving the investigation of his brother’s death and the determination of the suspect’s guilt to the justice system.
