ADDIS ABABA, Nov. 6 — Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed urged African political parties to look beyond electoral competition and agree on long-term national priorities, saying unity, accountability and inclusive governance were essential to improving people’s lives.
Abiy delivered the remarks at the second African Political Parties Summit in Addis Ababa under the theme “Governing for Growth,” according to a statement posted on his X account on Nov. 6.
“This requires parties to look beyond electoral competition, build consensus on long-term national priorities that transcend changes in government, and work together in the national interest,” he said.
The summit, scheduled for Nov. 5–7 in the Ethiopian capital, brings political leadership and governance into focus as parties consider their role in advancing development across the continent.
Abiy linked his message to Medemer, the political philosophy he promotes, saying cooperation and accountable leadership should translate into improvements in people’s lives.
“Guided by Medemer, unity, accountability and inclusive governance are essential to ensuring that political leadership improves people’s lives,” he said.
He also called for greater investment in the next generation of political leaders, stressing the importance of giving them responsibilities and opportunities to develop.
“Equally important is investing in the next generation of leaders by giving them responsibilities and opportunities to grow,” Abiy said.
