ATHENS, Greece, Oct. 22 (Horndiplomat) — The United Arab Emirates has announced plans to invest an additional €15 billion in Greece, expanding a strategic investment partnership as Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan held talks with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in Athens, the Emirates News Agency (WAM) reported on Thursday.

The announcement builds on a €4 billion joint investment initiative launched in May 2022, which has supported major transactions in sectors including energy and healthcare.

The proposed additional investment would significantly expand economic cooperation between the two countries, with a focus on strategic industries, infrastructure, advanced technology and sustainable development.

Sheikh Khaled met Mitsotakis at the Greek Prime Minister’s Office, where the two leaders reviewed bilateral relations and discussed opportunities to strengthen their strategic partnership.

Mitsotakis welcomed the Crown Prince and his accompanying delegation, reaffirming Greece’s commitment to expanding cooperation with the UAE across sectors of mutual interest.

Sheikh Khaled conveyed greetings from UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, while the Greek prime minister extended his greetings to the Emirati leader.

According to WAM, the two sides discussed expanding their joint investment initiative, building on projects completed under the existing €4 billion framework.

The initiative has facilitated investments in energy and healthcare, demonstrating the growing economic relationship between Abu Dhabi and Athens.

The UAE said the additional €15 billion investment intention reflected its confidence in Greece’s economic prospects, strategic geographical position and role in connecting European markets with regional and international economies.

The planned expansion is expected to encourage closer cooperation between Emirati and Greek investment institutions and companies, opening opportunities for major projects and long-term commercial partnerships.

During their talks, Sheikh Khaled and Mitsotakis also explored cooperation in renewable energy, infrastructure, innovation, healthcare and advanced technology.

Sheikh Khaled reaffirmed the UAE’s commitment to strengthening its strategic relationship with Greece and expanding economic partnerships that support the development priorities of both countries.

The Crown Prince praised the achievements of the existing investment initiative, saying completed projects demonstrated the strength of bilateral relations and the ability to turn investment opportunities into tangible economic outcomes.

The two leaders also discussed regional and international developments, particularly the situation in the Middle East, and emphasised the importance of dialogue and diplomatic solutions in promoting regional peace and stability.

Expanded talks were attended by senior officials from both countries, including UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of State for International Cooperation Reem Al Hashimy, Minister of Foreign Trade Thani Al Zeyoudi and Minister of Investment Mohamed Hassan Alsuwaidi.

The UAE and Greece have strengthened their diplomatic and economic ties in recent years, with investment cooperation becoming a central pillar of their strategic partnership.

The additional €15 billion announcement marks a further step in that relationship, potentially bringing the combined value of the original initiative and proposed expansion to €19 billion, although the newly announced funds represent an investment intention rather than completed transactions.
