HARGEISA, Oct 17 (Horndiplomat) — Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi, widely known as Irro, has urged newly appointed ambassadors, an envoy and deputy ambassadors to strengthen diplomatic relations, advance national interests and promote Somaliland’s international standing.

The president made the remarks during a meeting with the newly appointed diplomats, attended by Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Minister Abdirahman Dahir Adan Bakal, according to a statement from the Somaliland presidency.

Irro stressed that diplomatic appointments carried responsibilities beyond formal representation, requiring officials to defend Somaliland’s national interests, uphold its reputation and advance its strategic priorities abroad.

He said the diplomats were assuming their responsibilities at a significant moment for Somaliland’s international engagement, as awareness of its political status, governance and strategic importance in the Horn of Africa continued to grow.

The president called on the diplomats to demonstrate professionalism, integrity and accountability while strengthening relations with their host countries.

He urged them to prioritise mutual understanding, cooperation and shared interests, while pursuing diplomatic, political, economic and development opportunities that could benefit Somaliland.

Irro also emphasised the importance of engaging Somaliland communities abroad, calling on the diplomats to strengthen ties with diaspora organisations and encourage their participation in national development.

He said Somaliland’s overseas communities could play an important role in advancing the country’s interests by using their professional expertise, international networks and economic connections.

The newly appointed ambassadors, envoy and deputy ambassadors reaffirmed their commitment to carrying out their diplomatic duties with professionalism and integrity, according to the presidency.

They pledged to prioritise Somaliland’s national interests, protect its international reputation and work towards achieving the government’s diplomatic and strategic objectives.

The meeting comes as Somaliland seeks to expand its diplomatic partnerships, strengthen international engagement and attract greater economic cooperation.
