Somaliland: Sonsaf condemns arrest of opposition members

The chairman of Somaliland Non-State Actors Forum Anwar Abdirahman Warsame condemned the arrest of two opposition leaders, Khadar Hussein Abdi, the secretary-general of Waddani, and the spokesperson of the party, Barkhad Jama Batun.

The chairman of Sonsaf also condemned the closed down of the headquarters of Horn Cable TV in Hargeisa.

“Somaliland is based on mutual agreement, compromise and avoiding anything that will set back and damage the democratisation process and the recognition of Somaliland. Reconciliation and compromise are the foundation of Somaliland progress. It’s in the National interest to act.,” said Anwar Abdirahman chairman of Sonsaf

He added

“CSOs are urging the government to follow the law and NOT to create further chaos by arresting citizens of Somaliland. The public has the right to peaceful demos/expression. The demonstration has to also follow the procedures and inform the security forces prior to the date of demons.”

On Sunday night, 17th November 2019, the Police in Somaliland arrested two opposition leaders, Khadar Hussein Abdi, the secretary-general of Waddani, and the spokesperson of the party, Barkhad Jama Batun. Waddani is the main opposition party of Somaliland, which came second in last presidential election.

Today, 18th November, police officers closed down the headquarters of Horn Cable TV in Hargeisa. Also, the police arrested the acting editor of Horn Cable TV, Abdikadir Oman (Oday).
