A security guard who works for the International Committee of the Red Cross in the Somali capital of Mogadishu kidnapped the German nurse who went missing earlier this week, the country’s security minister revealed yesterday.

Garowe Online reported Abdalaziz Ali Ibrahim saying: “One of the security guards of the ICRC named Mohamud Mohamed Alas, was behind the abduction of the female aid worker.”

Sonja Nientiet, a German nurse, was abducted from the ICRC compound along with another ICRC employee at 20:00 Somali local time on Wednesday.

A car registered with the ICRC was used to transport the German nurse out of the compound, sidestepping security by leaving through a rear exit.

An anonymous security source fears that Nientiet could be sold on to the Al-Shabaab armed group, an affiliate of Al-Qaeda. The group may go on to request a ransom for Nientiet.

ICRC has called for the immediate and unconditional release of its employee.
