Horndiplomat-Foreign Minister Dr Workneh Gebeyehu received the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Mr Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein at his office on Wednesday (April 25, 2018) and discussions focused on ways of establishing closer cooperation with UN Human Rights Office of the High Commissioner (OHCHR) and the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). The two sides have also touched upon the recent remarkable progresses that are being witnessed in Ethiopia following the appointment of the new Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed.
Dr. Workneh expressed Ethiopia’s continued commitment to its international obligations and noted the ongoing political reform, including issues of governance, widening democratic space, and respect of human rights. He also mentioned the ongoing government’s reform measures in the country ranging from the ongoing efforts to pardon political leaders to an all inclusive political dialogue among various communities.
Commending the recent report of the High Commission on Ethiopia, Dr. Workneh said such independent report would further encourage the country to strive for more positive results in such score.
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Mr. Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein welcomed the recent political reforms in Ethiopia and mentioned the continuous progresses made in the country in terms of promoting democratic rule of governance and dealing with related challenges.
Mr. Zeid also praised the warm hospitality accorded to him and highlighted on his stay in Ethiopia and his meetings with Aba Gedas. He further noted that his visit was quite a success and commended the government’s openness and commitment to transform the country.
The two sides further reaffirmed their readiness to work more closely and inked a Memorandum of Understanding to host the establishment of OHCHR Regional Office in Ethiopia.
