Somaliland President Meets with UN Envoy Nicholas Haysom

The meeting accompanied by the president, Abdirahman Abdillahi Ismail (Saylici) Vice President of Somaliland, Foreign Minister Dr.Saad Ali Shire, Interior Minister Mohamed Kahin Ahmed, Ex-Minister of Finance Ambassador Hussein Ali Dualeh(Awil).

The Two sides discussed issues related to Development, Regional security, resuming Somaliland-Somalia talks and a dispute with neighbouring Puntland over Tukaraq.

After the Meeting between Somaliland President and the United Nations Special Representative, Somaliland’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr.Sa’ad Ali Shire told to the media.

Dr.Shire says

“Today’s the President met with United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Representative Ambassador Nicholas Haysom, the president and UN delegations discussed issues related to Development, Regional security, resuming Somaliland-Somalia talks.”

On the other hand, The United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Somalia Nicholas Haysom told media Says

“I had the opportunity to discuss with the president the recent changes in the region, the challenges facing Somaliland and of course, in that regard, we touched on the conflict in Tukaraq,” he said. “In particular, how that conflict can be managed to avoid any conflagration, any irruption of hostilities in the short term, and a long-term solution for that conflict.”

“Here in Somaliland we got a sense of the impact of the changes in the region and what that meant for the challenges facing Somaliland,”

Mr.Haysom added. “And, of course, [we got] to discuss the Somaliland-Somalia relations.”

The UN official also met with a group of Somaliland civil society representatives and parliamentarians, who provided him with an overview of challenges and achievements in recent years regarding political, electoral and security issues.

On 12 September 2018, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres announced the appointment of Nicholas Haysom of South Africa as his Special Representative for Somalia and Head of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM).
