Horndiplomat-Somaliland At least nine inmates in Hargeisa main prison began a hunger strike to protest against being kept in the jail after having completed their sentence terms. Horndiplomat reports
The Inmates lawyer Mohamed Ahmed Abokor told VOA Somali, said the inmates started a hunger strike on Saturday.
“The inmates started the hunger strike on Saturday are claiming that their prison terms have expired, two has been already sick, They are imprisoned for terrorists related cases.”Said Abokor
The Nine Inmates have been arrested in 2003 that they imprisoned for “terrorists related” cases.
according to the Inmate’s Lawyer, In 2008 former President of Somaliland Dahir Riyale Kahin released presidential pardon that reducing the jail terms of Inmates but unfortunately, The President has withdrawn from the amnesty after deadly terror attacks in Hargeisa town.
On the other hand, The Human Rights Center of Somaliland concerned the situations of the inmates that began a hunger strike.
“We are very concerned about their situation. Two of them have been in ill health for many years, and they are among those who are on hunger strike.” Guleid Ahmed Jama The Director of Human Rights Center told Horndiplomat
No reaction so far from Somaliland Ministry of Justice and Prison officials.
