Ethiopia, UAE agree to expedite overseas labor agreement

Foreign Minister Dr. Workneh Gebeyhu has conferred with Nasser Bin Thani Al Hamel, Minister of Human Resource and Emiritization of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) today (January 9) during which the two sides have underscored the need to fast-track the signing of the overseas labor agreement that was being discussed for over 2 years.

Commending the UAE for its unflinching position towards ensuring the dignity and rights of Ethiopian Nationals living in the country, Dr. Workneh dubbed Ethiopians working in the UAE as “bridges between the two countries.” The Minister noted the signing of the overseas labor agreement will create a viable legal framework for protection and safety of workers; thus urged the need to conclude the ongoing exchange of technical matters and ink the agreement sooner.

Noting the ties between the two countries as “important”, Minister Nasser Bin Thani Al Hamel on his part reiterated the importance of close collaboration and consultation to further enhance the long-standing ties.

Officials from the Ethiopian Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs along with experts from Foreign Affairs will meet their UAE counterparts to discuss on technical documents exchanged earlier.

Dr. Workneh is scheduled to meet his UAE counterpart later today.
