Somaliland, a self-declared state that broke away from Somalia in 1991 has elected a former pilot and rebel leader Musa Bihi Abdi as president.

Abdi, a former air force pilot was the candidate of the ruling Kulmiye party.

He was declared the winner of the presidential elections, with a little more than 55% of the vote. Somaliland is considered a territory in Somalia by the international community – but it enjoys a level of

stability. We examine the role women played in the elections and indeed the role they play as the country seeks international recognition.
