Building on the First Lady’s anti-childhood-obesity campaign ‘Lets Move!’, the video ‘The History of Exercise’ showcases the evolution of workouts through the decades.

As if First Lady Michelle Obama and ‘Parks and Recreation’ actor Nick Offerman weren’t amazing enough individually, the duo teamed up with Funny Or Die to create a video for the fitness app and website ‘#0to60’ in honour of the 60th anniversary of the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition. Building on the First Lady’s anti-childhood-obesity campaign ‘Lets Move!’, the video ‘The History of Exercise’ showcases the evolution of workouts through the decades.

The video starts as back as the 1950s, when Offerman is seen working out with a vibrating belt. In the ’60s, it’s an electrical muscle stimulation, a rowing machine in the ’70s, a thigh master in the ’80s, an ab wheel in the ’90s, a shake weight in 2000s and a medicine ball in the present era. The plot is brilliant as Offerman walks through exercise trends by the decade, but when he gets too tired during a a slapstick routine from the ’80s, thought-bubble Michelle Obama comes to his rescue. “Nick, come on, you can do it! Get back out there and exercise!” Obama encourages him. And in a fun twist, it turns out that Obama is sitting right next to him, looking cool as always and lifting weights too.

The short video, which is a part of a campaign to encourage physical activity, appears under the hashtag #0to60 and the brand new app and website includes fitness and nutrition tips. The takeaway from the Obama-Offerman video is that no matter the approach, the most important thing is to keep moving and staying healthy.
