Somaliland:President Silanyo Guarantees the Election Mandate for the EU Delegation

Horndiplomat-The President of the republic of Somaliland Ahmed Mahamud Silanyo received EU Special Representative for Somalia and Somaliland, Mr. Michele Cevone D’Urso and deputy British Ambassador to Ethiopia, Cat Evans along with other diplomats Sunday 24, July according to a press release.

The President thanked the delegation for their visit to Somaliland and expressed gratitude for the aid that the European Union and British Government give to Somaliland. Also, the President commended the effective relation between the EU and Somaliland and urged them to continue from there. On the other hand, the President condemned the terrorist acts took place in Paris, Brussels and Munich and sent condolence to the victims of those countries.

The President talked about the democratic process of the country and said it is going well, as planned. Speaking on the voter registration as crucial part of democratization, the President said that the registration of 206 sites in Sanag region have fully opened and still running without difficulty.

Speaking on the process of the impending elections in Somalia, the president reiterated that Somaliland is not and will not be part of that process.

According to the press release, the president disclosed that Somaliland is fully endorsing the construction of the ‘Berbera Corridor’ and he suggested that the European Union have to submit their allotment fairly soon.

Finally, the president reiterated his commitment for the next election to take place on its deadline on 27 March 2017 and added that his party is in talks with the two other political parties about the proportionality of seats in parliament as the only challenge emerged to hinder this election, according to the press.

On his part, the head of the delegation Mr. Michele Cervone D’Urso acknowledged the president for his warm reception and emphasized that the election should take place on its due time and congratulated the president on the maturity of his leadership to lead the country in democracy and the better way the registration activities is going on.
