Horndiplomat-The Mayor, Councillor Julian Brookes welcomed Yusuf, Fathi and Hamud, originally from Borama in Somaliland last week to hear about the plans for the ‘Borama Comes to Henley’ event taking place this Saturday (16 July) from 2-5pm. The event will see around 100 people, originally from Borama, travel from the UK, Netherlands and America to put on a spectacular, colourful dancing, sing and drumming show in Market Square.
Yusuf said, “We’re delighted to be putting on another Henley event after the successful event in 2014 with lots more people coming this time – it will be a heavy load of entertainment all afternoon in the square.”
Henley has had a friendship link with Borama since 1982 which was formed through local resident, Brigadier Malcolm Page who served there in 1947 and looked after many who were in the Somaliland Scouts Regiment. Malcolm continues to Chair the Borama Friendship Association and said, “This event will be a great way for people to learn about our link and understand the culture.”
In Borama they have recently named a park, the Henley Park and they are planning to name a road after Malcolm.
The Mayor said, “I feel very honoured and privileged to be officially opening the event on Saturday and hope that lots of people come to the event to watch and meet our guests from our friendship town.”
